Hugh Jarvis
Hugh W. Jarvis (PhD/MLS) is an archaeologist and librarian who is currently Cybrarian for the University at Buffalo (one of the flagships in the State University of New York system). His archaeological background focuses on lithic sourcing (western New York chert and South African hornfels), as well as participating on a scattering of field and CRM projects in Ontario, New York, the UK, and South Africa. He has made some preliminary studies into ways to apply stronger geological standards in archaeology (e.g. nomenclature) and applying simple field techniques (e.g. UVFA). Perhaps more significantly, he has long been involved in Internet-based "service" projects: building and maintaining online directories, publications, way-finders (lithics and ethics of looting, and discussion lists to assist in scholarly collaboration and knowledge building. For years he has been helping the American Anthropological Association in various capacities with their Web communications and publishing, most recently serving on the now-defunct AnthroSource Steering Committee (ASSC) and the newly formed Committee on the Future of Print and Electronic Publishing (CFPEP). His work for the University involves managing information in an extensive e-cosystem of Internet services, plus the extensive behind-the-scenes human cooperation that makes this all possible. Links to some of these projects and his cv are available here (excuse the retro pages). |
